CAT4 for boarding school applications

Demystifying the CAT4: How Top Schools Assess Potential

When applying to leading independent and boarding schools in the UK, families frequently encounter the CAT4 (Cognitive Abilities Test, 4th Edition). Widely utilised by admissions teams to evaluate applicants and forecast future academic achievement, the assessment provides schools with an objective picture of a student’s underlying intellectual potential.

What is the CAT4?

Unlike standard academic examinations that measure learned curriculum knowledge in subjects like English or Mathematics, the CAT4 assesses cognitive ability and reasoning. In many respects, it operates similarly to an adult IQ test, evaluating how a child thinks, processes novel information, and solves problems rather than what facts they have memorised.

The test is fully computer-based and administered under strict time limits, making swift visual, verbal, and logical processing essential.

How the CAT4 is Structured

The assessment consists of four distinct reasoning batteries, each containing two specific subtests:

Quantitative Reasoning

Evaluates a student's ability to identify numerical patterns, rules, and mathematical logic through Number Series and Number Analogies.

Verbal Reasoning

Measures language-based problem-solving and understanding of word relationships using Verbal Classification and Verbal Analogies.

Non-Verbal Reasoning

Tests spatial logic using shapes and visual patterns, independent of language skills, through Figure Classification and Figure Matrices.

Spatial Ability

Assesses the mental manipulation of 2D and 3D shapes, transformations, and spatial visualisations via Figure Analysis and Figure Recognition.

Can You Revise for the CAT4?

The official position from test publishers is that underlying cognitive aptitude cannot be taught, which is why official past papers are not made publicly available.

However, while core cognitive potential remains relatively stable, test familiarity, speed, and confidence can be significantly improved.

Because the CAT4 is intensely time-pressured and features unique question formats that students rarely encounter in standard school classrooms, taking the test without prior exposure can lead to underperformance due to unfamiliarity or time anxiety.

At Sumner Consulting, we bridge this gap by providing bespoke access to high-quality practice materials and mock assessments curated from leading private subscriptions. Through structured preparation, students learn to:

  • Identify underlying question patterns swiftly and accurately.

  • Master effective pacing strategies to handle strict countdown timers.

  • Approach unfamiliar non-verbal and spatial problems with calm assurance.
